You Do You, Boo: Wellness Trends that Are Turning Heads

Wellness trends that are turning heads | Mirra Skincare

2020 and New Year’s Resolutions sparked a movement and brought new meaning to wellness, creating tons of new wellness trends for 2021. To celebrate a month completed of new beginnings and new goals, we are covering wellness trends that are turning heads.

These wellness trends have been broken down into 4 different categories: fitness, beauty, food, health/mental health. Of course, all wellness trends bleed into other categories because they all serve one overarching purpose (fuel and better our bodies) but for today’s purposes, they are broken into easy to target categories.

1. 12-3-30 Treadmill Workout

The 12-3-30 treadmill workout rose to fame on TikTok and has since been an extremely popular workout choice this year. Set your treadmills incline at 12%, its speed at three, and you are set to sweat for 30 minutes. The workout is a great choice for regular gym-goers or those getting back into a fitness routine. Some of the benefits include but are not limited to:

  • Easy on body from low impact exercise
  • Heart health
  • Toned muscles
  • Boosted serotonin
  • Boosted energy

If you do not have access to a treadmill, walking briskly outside for 30 minutes to get your body moving is just as beneficial! I love walking outside to get fresh air and get much needed “me” time.

2. Virtual Fitness Classes

Virtual fitness classes have seen huge uptake and are here to stay in 2021. There is an abundance of virtual class options available including fan favorites yoga, HITT, and pilates. Classes include bodyweight training and equipment training so you can find an option that suits your workout routine best. Participate in virtual fitness classes through studios or fitness influencers on YouTube to boost serotonin levels, get stronger, help your heart, save money, and be in the comfort of your own home.

Here’s a list of popular virtual fitness classes:

  • Orange Theory’s Free 30-Minute Workout
  • Core Power Yoga Free Class Collection
  • Peloton (90-day free trial)
  • Toni Mitchell YouTube Channel
  • Yoga With Adriene

1. Hydrocolloid Skin Patches & Pimple Patches

Hydrocolloid skin patches also climbed their way to fame on TikTok. Hydrocolloid patches are gel-textured strips applied to acne and left on during the day or overnight. The patches are dermatologist approved and work to absorb excess fluids like oil and puss, extracting pimples. The hydrocolloid skin patches cover large surface areas so if you are looking for something smaller, pimple patches may be right for you. I love hydrocolloid skin patches and pimple patches because they speed up the healing process and prevent me from picking at my skin.

Here’s a list of popular hydrocolloid skin patches and pimple patches:

2. Skin Kits

2020 has taught us that simplicity is beautiful and functional. The beauty and skincare industry is seeing an increase in skin kit sales because they simplify the skin ritual process providing all the products needed in one place. And, with fewer products giving glowing skin, it proves that less is more. Quality over quantity, am I right?

Here’s a list of skin kits ready for purchase:

1. “Half-Scratch” Cooking Kits

Cooking from home has seen a massive increase and unfortunately, not everyone was born gifted in the kitchen. Luckily, “half-scratch” cooking kits exist and man do we love them. Meals with veggies and meats (or plant-friendly options) are prepared and prepackaged for purchase. All you have to do is follow the cooking instructions provided. “Half-scratch” meals can be found in grocery stores or ordered through meal prep services like Hello Fresh.

2. Wellness Ingredients

Our diet and gut play a huge role in our body’s happiness, skin moods, and mental health. Medicinal mushrooms, adaptogens, teas, and herbs will remain extremely popular. Try adding chickpeas for protein and jackfruit for vitamin D into your diet for nutritional support and deliciousness.

Health and Mental Health

1. Sleep care = Self Care

We are not ourselves when we are tired which is why sleep care is a huge wellness trend in 2021. According to the Mayo Clinic, adults should be getting 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Getting a good night’s sleep boosts your immune system, lowers risk for serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease, reduces stress and improves mood, and allows you to think more clearly during the day leading to an increase in productivity.

If you struggle with sleep, here are research-backed tips to help you sleep better at night:

  • Reduce blue light exposure in the evening
    • Invest in blue light glasses, download apps to reduce blue light, or stop using electronic devices 2 hours before bedtime
  • Do not consume caffeine late in the day
  • Try to sleep and wake at consistent times
  • Optimize bedroom environment by reducing external noise and light while also ensuring your bedroom is a clean, relaxing space

2. Digital Detoxes

It is easy to fall into the trap of scrolling through social media feeds for hours, being consumed with everything going on in the world. Research has shown that prolonged use of social media networks can have detrimental effects on our mental health with side effects such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and addiction.

Of course, this is not the case for everyone, but it is always a good idea to unplug and give yourself a break from the social media world. Doing so may increase your productivity and mood. It may even give you time to pick up a new hobby (or two!)

You can participate in a digital detox by setting app time limits or deleting apps from your phone for a period of time. I usually give myself one digital detox a month by deleting apps for 3-7 days, or longer. This past summer I deleted my social media platforms for two weeks and it was an incredible feeling.

3. Virtual Therapy

The idea of disclosing personal information over zoom, text, or call may seem intimidating but virtual therapy is growing exponentially in popularity since in-person therapy was put on pause. Virtual therapy platforms employ licensed professionals in psychotherapy, psychiatry, or psychology fields with expertise in various fields including but not limited to PTSD, trauma, depression, anxiety, couple therapy, eating disorders, and substance abuse. Each platform has different flexible payment options and fees, some even accepting insurance.

Here’s a list of the top 5 virtual therapy services at your disposal:

  • Talkspace
  • BetterHelp
  •  7 Cups
  • Online-Therapy.com
  • AmWell

I have tried a handful of the listed wellness trends myself and they are all 100% worth trying. My favorite investments in myself have been buying hydrocolloid acid patches, participating in digital detoxes, trying the 12-3-30 treadmill challenge, and focusing on my sleep.

These wellness trends serve as a guide for you to try new things and experiment to find what works best for you and your wellness. You Do You, Boo!
