Home air purifiers are becoming more popular. From fires to rising pollution to COVID, there is rising worry about air quality. Despite the fact that your house is meant to give shelter, many of us are spending far more time indoors than before. As a result, you may be exposed to more indoor particles and contaminants, which can cause or worsen a number of health issues ranging from mild to severe. Are air purifier benefits worth it? Is using one a trustworthy method for removing indoor pollutants? The quick answer is yes, but only to a certain extent.

Key Points

  • Air purifiers filter and neutralize harmful particles in the air which may be aggravating your hair and skin.
  • Air purifiers can alleviate allergies, prevent disease and premature aging, improve lung and heart health, and help you get better sleep.
  • Make sure the one you choose is built for the correct amount of space, and remember to replace the filters regularly so that it is most effective.

How air purifiers work

Air purifiers basically clean your indoor air, which may house pollutants, allergies, and toxins. Essential oil diffusers and humidifiers, which add particles to indoor air, are the total opposite of these devices. The amount of particles eliminated by an air purifier is determined by the kind you select. If you are planning on getting one, make sure it is built for the correct amount of space, and remember to replace the filters regularly so that it is most effective.

Some air purifiers utilize filters, which are used in certain versions to catch particles as air passes through them, while other devices may neutralize particles in the air without filtering them first. A negative ion generating air purifier is another option, since it helps to attract positive ion particles in the air and neutralize them.

Air purifier benefits

HEPA-technology air purifiers can remove 99.7% of the airborne particulate matter (PM) circulating in your home environment. Usually, HEPA filters can trap particles as little as 0.3 microns (the largest particles visible to human eyes are 50-60 microns) Removing these contaminants can result in a variety of short- and long-term health advantages including:

1. Reduce Allergens and Providing Allergy Relief

If you suffer from allergies, having an air purifier in your home could be extremely advantageous. Some people are troubled by irritants in the environment, such as dust and other pollutants, or suffer from seasonal allergies. In either case, a good filtration system may significantly minimize these irritants and enhance your quality of life, at least while you're at home.

2. Prevent disease

Closing the doors and windows does not guarantee we can keep out contaminants like nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. These gasses are typically present in high-traffic locations and may find their way into your house. Exposure to carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide PM, according to the National Library of Medicine, increases the risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Even if you don't live in a huge city with a lot of traffic, the pollutants from cleaning products might damage the air in your house. Toxic compounds including ammonia, chlorine, and phthalates are included in many common home cleansers. Small amounts of exposure to certain substances may be safe, but repeated exposure might cause major health problems like tumors, neurological, or cardiovascular disorders.

3. Slow Skin Aging

Extrinsic skin aging signs like pigment spots and wrinkles, as well as serious skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne, and, in some cases, skin cancer, have been linked to air pollution exposure in recent studies. By using an air purifier, you may reduce the harmful aging effects of pollution.

4. Improve Lung and Heart Health

Several studies have indicated that installing air purifiers lowers blood pressure and increases heart rate. For example, a short study of 35 Chinese college students discovered that the devices enhanced air quality by lowering fine particulate matter levels by 57%. The students' blood pressure levels and lung functioning both improved.

5. Improve Quality of Sleep

According to a new study, people who sleep with an air purifier in their bedroom get a better night's sleep. People are said to fall asleep faster and remain asleep for longer. The use of an air purifier reduces the number of times individuals wake up throughout the night.

While air purifier benefits are pretty amazing, it may be too costly, and you still might not need one depending on the air quality in your home. Here is a list of things you can do in addition to the use of an air purifier to keep your air clean:

  • Clean rugs, carpeting, and fabric furniture often. This includes your bed! Try to vacuum once a week with a HEPA filter vacuum.
  • Wash bedding in hot water once a week.
  • Bathe pets often.
  • Make sure your home is at the right humidity so that dust mites and mold cannot grow.
  • Never smoke inside.
  • Switch to non-toxic cleaning products.
  • Change HVAC air filters every 30 to 90 days, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America.

Final Thoughts

If you're worried about your air quality there are steps you can take to do something about it. Sadly, as with anything, they are not a cure-all, but air purifier benefits are pretty amazing.
