Is The Dyson Airwrap Worth It?

Is The Dyson Airwrap Worth It? I Mirra Skincare

The Dyson Airwrap is ALL over social media. It feels like *everyone* received it as a gift during the holiday season. And well, I got it too. I broke down during Black Friday and purchased it for myself as an early Christmas present. It was all over my TikTok feed, with individuals raving about how revolutionary the tool was. I had already been following the tool for a few months, so after more research, I decided to make the purchase in order to answer my own lingering question: is the Dyson Airwrap worth it?

Key Points

  • The Dyson Airwrap is an all-in-one blow drying, curling, and straightening hair tool
  • Two main selling features of the tool is the Coanda effect and its intelligent heat control
  • The Airwrap may be worth it to some, but not for all

Like myself, everyone’s begging to know, “is the Dyson Airwrap worth it?” Today, I have a loaded answer to that question. After two months of owning and incorporating the tool into my hair styling ritual, I feel comfortable speaking on the product and my experience with it. Let’s jump right into it.

What is the Dyson Airwrap?

The Dyson Airwrap is a multi-functional hair styling tool that brings salon quality hair styles to your front door. The Dyson Airwrap is unlike any other product on the market, leaving its revolutionary mark on the industry.

The hair tool spent years in research and development, with over $31.4 million invested and 642 prototypes created. Today, the final product includes a sleek storage box, 6 different attachments, an air filter, a digital handheld motor, and intelligent heat control.

Dyson Airwrap Features

The Coanda Effect

The product is known for many features, but the most notable is its Coanda effect (how the hair magically wraps itself around the curling barrels). The Coanda effect, as Dyson states, is an “aerodynamic phenomenon,”. In simple terms, air under correct speed and pressure conditions creates an air vortex due the air’s natural tendency to follow an adjacent surface.

Dyson’s digital handheld motor creates the conditions needed for the Coanda effect. The motor and barrel design leads to the creation of the Coanda effect. As previously mentioned, this leads to the hair magically wrapping itself around the curling barrels.

Intelligent Heat Control

Intelligent heat control and no extreme heat damage is the product's second major selling point. Within the digital handheld motor, the airflow is measured and controlled 40 times per second to ensure the temperature does not exceed 302 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus, individuals are able to curl, straighten, and style their hair without the fear of extreme heat damage and dead ends.

Breaking Down The Tool

  • Digital Handheld Motor

The digital handheld motor has a handful of features. It has three airflow settings ranging from least to most powerful. Likewise, it has three heat settings ranging from cold air to the warmest air. It also has a cool shot to ensure your styles are set.

  • Pre-Drying Styler

The Airwrap is meant to be used on damp hair, not wet hair. So, the pre-drying attachment is used to take hair from wet to damp, preparing it for styling with the next chosen attachment.

  • Round Brush

The round brush attachment functions as any other blow dryer brush would, but better. The bristles of the brush are long and thin, allowing more air to enter deep into the hair. The round brush gives shape and volume for a salon blow out at home.

  • Soft Smoothing Brush

The soft smoothing brush functions as a straightening tool. The bristles are gentle, with ball-tipped bristles to protect the scalp

  • Firm Smoothing Brush

In contrast to the soft smoothing brush, the firm smoothing brush has firmer bristles and was created for individuals with frizz-prone hair. If your hair is unruly and you desire frizz-free and fewer flyways, this straightening attachment is for you.

  • Airwrap Barrels

The Airwrap curling barrels come in two sizes: 1.2 and 1.6 inches. The 1.2 inch barrels are used for voluminous curls or waves. On the other hand, the 1.6 inch barrels produce looser (and still voluminous) bouncy curls and waves.

Pros, Cons, and Tips for the Airwrap

Here’s a curated list of pros, cons, and tips of the Airwrap I’ve experienced after two months of use.

Pros

  • Less heat damage (thanks to its intelligent heat control!)
  • It is an all-in-one blow dryer, straightener, and curler
  • It is much quieter than any other hair drying tool I’ve used in the past
  • Drying and styling time is cut in half
  • You can pay monthly for the tool when purchasing through Dyson

Cons

  • A hefty price tag of $550 (not including taxes)
  • The technology was created to work on damp hair, so it is more difficult to touch up curls on hair that is already dry
  • Storing it takes A LOT of space - so you need ample storage room!
  • Steep learning curve with the tool

Tips

  • Use products (mousse, hair spray, etc) to help hold your curls in place
  • Make sure your hair is 75-80% dry before styling with the curling barrels
  • Make sure your hair is completely dry before releasing curls from the barrel - any retained moisture will cause the curls to fall
  • Cool blast for at least 10 seconds to set your hair
  • Don’t be alarmed by the “sausage” like curls and DO NOT touch your curls - wait for them to completely cool before combing them out (I promise they will fall beautifully)

Final Thoughts: Is The Dyson AirWrap Worth it?

So, is the Dyson Airwrap worth it? To be quite frank, it honestly depends on your individual hair care habits. If you need to use a hair tool every single day after showering, then the Airwrap is 100% worth it. In contrast to traditional styling tools, it is healthier for your hair in the long run due to its intelligent heat control and it cuts styling time in half after showering.

Moreover, if you have the patience to undertake the steep learning curve that accompanies the tool, then it might be for you. On the other hand, if you do not have the patience to undertake the steep learning curve, you may not reap all the benefits of the tool.

What about people who don’t use a hair tool every single day, is the Dyson Airwrap worth it for them too? That would be an individual choice. If you purchase the Airwrap through Dyson, it grants you a 30 day trial (60 days for the holidays) to test the product. If the tool isn’t right for you, you get to return the product and receive a full refund.

As for myself, I have not decided if the Airwrap is the right hair tool for me. There are many things I love about the product like the pre-styling dryer and round brush attachment, shorter dry time, and heat control. However, I am not completely sold on how my hair looks with the curls. I also do not wash my hair every single day, so being able to use the tool everyday and get my money’s worth is questionable. The verdict is still in the air for me!

Like I said, the decision boils down to your hair care habits, routine, and hair desires. The choice is personal. If you’re on the edge, consider Dyson’s trial period and test the product to see if it’s right for you!
